As I said on the previous page, I am going to explain to you, how you can get your very own, self-hosted WordPress Blog, without it costing the earth.
To have a self-hosted blog you need to purchase these two things;
- A Domain Name
- A Hosting Account
A domain name can be purchased at a domain registrar such as Name Cheap, and as the name suggest’s it is cheap, or you can buy one from Web Host UK, or any domain registrar, you simply go to their website, go to the domain search page and enter your chosen domain.
You need to take time to think of a domain name because the chances are that the first name that you enter is taken. Domain names are not expensive, a .com name can be bought for as little as £6.00 per year, think of it as your piece of Internet real estate. I recommend that you also purchase ‘who is guard’ as this will give you protection on the ‘who is registrar’.
When you have bought your domain name you then need to purchase a hosting account. Hosting accounts are not expensive either, they start at around £2.99 per month if you pay for the year up front, I use Web Host UK and I recommend that you purchase from here because, the service is very good, they are based in the UK, there is 24 hour support, this website is hosted here so you can see how it performs, and also I will receive, at no cost to you, a small commission. 🙂
Just click the banner below to find out more.
Once you have got your Domain Name and Hosting Account, you need to join them together by pointing your Domain Name to your Host or Server.
To do this you will need your Domain Name Server settings, (DNS settings), these should have been e-mailed to you when you opened your hosting account, and they will look something like this NS1.samplename.com and NS2.samplename.com.
You need to enter these in the settings of your domain name at the domain name registrar where you purchased your domain name. Once you have done this, it can take up to 48 hours, or longer sometimes, for your domain name to propagate the Internet, you will then be all set to start building your website.
The next step is to build your website by installing WordPress Content Management System or CMS software onto your server. These days this is usually installed in just a few clicks, or you can download it from WordPress and install it yourself if you feel confident enough.
WordPress comes with at least one theme and a couple of plugins already installed, I will be talking more about themes and plugins on a later page. After you have installed WordPress you are ready to go.
To see if your blog is working correctly you should be able to view it in your browser bar by typing your domain name, it will display a freshly installed blog with a sample post and comment, you should also be able to log in to your blog admin, by entering the following link in your browser bar; http://yourblogname.com/wp-admin.php, obviously you would need to change yourblogname.com to your actual blog name! You should also bookmark this link because you will be needing it a lot.
Please do make a note of your WordPress blog admin username and password, and also your username and password for your domain name account and hosting account, do not forget them as there is nothing more frustrating than being locked out of your own website!
